Coaching for the Rest of Us
Create & Live Your Best Life
Executives and other leaders have enjoyed the life-enhancing benefits of professional coaching for decades… but what about the rest of us? Gig workers, self-employed folks, creatives, retirees and people who don’t fit into that corporate mold still deserve to live their ideal lives!
Life’s curveballs can leave us feeling discouraged, confused and stuck—and that’s where a coach comes in! A certified professional coach like me, Sonnjea Blackwell (pronounced Sawn’ jay), can help you sort through the jumble of thoughts and emotions associated with change so you can determine what your ideal life looks like and create an action plan to get there.

Get to Know Sonnjea
A writer, improv instructor, and nanny for an amazing kiddo with autism, I am well-acquainted with life’s unexpected curveballs—divorce after 30+ years of marriage, health challenges (MS, celiac disease and osteoporosis), three broken vertebrae (thanks, osteoporosis!) and moving to a whole new state on my own in my 50s, among other things.
Taking what I’ve learned from my own life transitions, I use my improv background and my coach training from the Yes, And Coaching Institute and the Institute of Holistic Integrative Studies to connect with clients on a deep level to help them navigate tricky transitions to make the most of their lives.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is coaching?
Coaching provides non-judgmental support to help people change, grow and become who they want to be. It’s a partnership of equals that builds awareness, expands choice and makes change less daunting (and maybe even fun)! It is not a treatment or therapy.
Who needs a coach?
Anyone facing any kind of transition—new career or position at work, relationship change, health challenge, getting out of a rut—as well as anyone who simply wants to level up in life can benefit from the objectivity, accountability and encouragement a coach provides.
What sort of advice does a coach offer?
None! Coaching is not about offering advice. It’s about asking powerful questions to evoke a new level of awareness in the client so they can make decisions around the actions they want to take to reach their life, health and wellness, relationship or other goals.
What’s the difference between therapy and coaching?
A therapist typically focuses on the reasons for a client’s behaviors and thought patterns, with the goal of healing issues and trauma from the past to manage the present. A coach’s focus is on the present, and how to create the future you desire. Unlike the therapist/patient relationship, a coaching relationship is a co-created partnership of equals.
How do I find the right coach for me?
The right coach for you is someone you resonate with and who upholds the highest degree of ethical practice to ensure you feel safe, validated and heard. They should be empathetic, while not shying away from asking you powerful questions to evoke a new level of awareness that facilitates your growth and development.
How long are sessions, and how long does coaching last?
You’re the captain of this ship! Sessions can last anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, and the coaching relationship continues as long as you find it effective. Most clients get the results they were looking for in 3-6 months; many return months or years later when another issue arises that they want help with.
